Languages Specialism

As a community centered grammar school we are proud to celebrate our diversity in language; our students and staff speak 22 languages at home. Our aim is for our specialism to develop the aspiration of our students to look beyond Gravesham to the rest of the world. We would welcome any support you can offer to help us achieve this aim.

  • Rich provision and excellence
    We have expanded our curriculum to now include Spanish, alongside French and German. Our courses are designed to teach our students real, practical language skills that enable them to access other cultures. Thanks to these bespoke programs, as well as the extra opportunities the specialism provides, our students are increasingly achieving improved results at all levels.
  • Whole school improvement
    We want Gravesend Grammar School to be a truly international school at the heart of our local community. The specialism has impacted in many areas across the school not just in its core focus of languages. Through a variety of extra-curricular and whole school events the students and staff are encouraged to see language as a vehicle for improvement and change.
  • Collaboration with Gravesham schools
    Through our primary school coordinator, we work with the local primary schools, liaising with colleagues to develop their language teaching skills, to enable their students to experience a richer language curriculum and develop a joy of learning language.
  • Working with the local community
    We hope to further develop our community links by offering evening Languages courses including Italian, to foster a culture of life-long learning. We are investigating forging stronger links with local businesses to offer them support for their languages needs.
  • Being progressive
    Our bespoke innovative courses within the school ensure that all our students engage in practical language study. These courses have been developed with input from the student body to take account of a wide variety of learning styles and language needs.
